As part of Beckwourth Frontier Days, the Feather River Fiddle and Bluegrass Jamboree is growing in stature and is expected to draw many of the north state's top pickers and fiddlers. The life of many of the performers is not unlike a nomad, and more than 40 trailers have reserved space at Beckwourth Riverfront Park for the weekend affair. The jamboree is an ambitious addition to Beckwourth Frontier Days. This year, the frenetic fiddling and picking will be occurring all day Saturday at the Feather River Pavilion at the J.C. Onderek Arena, named after the father of Beckwourth Riverfront Park, the late Jim Onderek, former Public Works Director for the City of Marysville. Feather River State Bank's continued support of the jamboree assures high quality performers will take part in an acoustic experience unrivaled at Beckwourth Riverfront Park. Performers will be giving a sneak preview of the action on Wednesday at Feather River State Bank locations in Marysville, Yuba City, Wheatland and Colusa. Be at any of the branches Wednesday afternoon and you'll get a taste of the quality of music brought to the area with the support of Feather River State Bank. The fun continues Friday night when a special competition is scheduled for Plumas Street in downtown Yuba City, in the parking lot of Pelton's Party Rentals. In addition to a gunfighting re-enactment at approximately 5:30 p.m., fiddlers are expected to compete for prizes in a band scramble. The Jamboree competition is sanctioned by the California Old Time Fiddler's Association and the National Bluegrass Association. Bob Hedrick, president of the California Old Time Fiddler's Association, is coordinating the event in cooperation with John and Susan Nicoletti of the historic Silver Dollar Saloon in Marysville. You have to be early if you want to catch all of Saturday's competition. While the rest of Beckwourth Frontier Days doesn't open until 10 a.m., opening ceremonies for the Feather River Fiddle and Bluegrass Jamboree begin at 8 a.m., and competition begins promptly at 8:15 a.m., with non-stop music until closing ceremonies and awards at approximately 4 p.m. Sunday, the Feather River Pavilion will convert to the Feather River Tent Revival, with fiddle and bluegrass music with a gospel flavor, a visit from the renowned Bethel A.M.E. church choir, a visit from a "circuit riding preacher" from the Live Oak Assembly of God church, and gospel hymns from trick-riding opera singer, Dorothy McPherson-Donell.
