That's the repertoire of cowboy entertainer Larry Maurice who returns to Beckwourth Frontier Days and the Feather River Fiddle and Bluegrass Jamboree on Saturday and Sunday. Before television, it was up to individuals to entertain each other with stories, and around the campfires of the American West they told some deliciously funny tales that continue on in the yarns of great Cowboy storytellers like Maurice. Maurice, who balances his real life job as a Cowboy with his busy entertainment schedule, manages to keep his fans informed of his riding and reciting schedule by publishing the Cow Camp Chronicle Newsletter. It's nearly as interesting as the traditional and original poems and stories he recites on stage. A student of the late 19th and early 20th century masters of the Cowboy storytelling genre, Maurice is highly regarded as a performer. He was nominated by the Academy of Western artists for the Will Rodgers Award as Best Male Cowboy Poet and he was host of a Fox television special titled, "Heroes on Horseback." He has performed at the Elko Cowboy Poetry gathering in Nevada, the Gene Autry Museum of Western Heritage in Los Angeles, at Canada's Cowboy Festival, and at state cowboy gatherings throughout the West. Although he started writing poetry when he was a kid, he had no idea at the time that it was Cowboy poetry that would take him on tour across the United States and Canada. Maurice will perform on both Saturday and Sunday. His appearance is supported by Poets and Writers Incorporated, through a grant it has received from the James Irvine Foundation.
