Well pardners, here we are again for the 9th Annual Beckwourth Frontier Days, Yuba-Sutter's original living history extravaganza. There's no question that Beckwourth is one of the most unique events in our community, and that it has continued for 9 years through the heroic efforts of many selfless and dedicated individuals who believe in both the rich historic legacy and the multi-cultural heritage of the Yuba-Sutter area. There have been far too many of these wonderful folks to list them individually, but two come to mind who should be mentioned: Mary Knapp who with the Yuba-Sutter Chamber of Commerce originally "dreamscaped" the idea for Beckwourth Frontier Days and of course, our late and beloved Vern Williams, who for many years provided the driving inspiration behind the event and even for many became "Jim Beckwourth" himself. Many thanks are due to both these great folks, and to all who've followed in their footsteps. So then, my brothers and sisters, whither Beckwourth Frontier Days for the future? As a good minister I should be prepared to take an offering about now, and in a way, I reckon I'll do just that; but it's more than your hard-earned dollars that we want in the collection plate (though we'll take those too, if you've a mind to become a sponsor!). You see, next year is the 10th Anniversary of Beckwourth Frontier Days, as well as (depending on whose calendar you believe) the 150th Anniversary of California statehood and the births of Yuba City and Marysville...or thereabouts! Consequently, next year should be one heck (you'll pardon the expression) of a party, especially at Beckwourth Frontier Days! But that party will only happen if you get involved! Vern Williams told me in 1993 that "You can only come to Beckwourth as a spectator once...then you've got to come back as a participant!" Well, Vern was right, at least in my life. I've come back every year, and brought my students from Faith Christian, my family (my kids have grown up at Beckwourth, it seems!) and my friends, and have even had the privilege of serving for the past three years as one of the directors of the event. So how about you? Are you ready to catch the Beckwourth spirit? There are so many ways to be involved! I think of Panda Morgan who generously donates storage at her business to store Beckwourth's growing list of props and buildings year-round; of Lou Malott who came two years ago to help out with carpentry and now is a board member and active Living History reenactor; and of Lee and Curt Burrows of the Yuba-Sutter Arts Council, who come right off of the Prune Festival (another great Yuba-Sutter event!) and plan and schedule all our mainstage entertainment for Beckwourth Days, and so many, many more volunteers, sponsors and benefactors. You can be a board member, you can portray a character from history, you can use your artistic abilities, you can help with public relations, you can help build, help tear down, or help clean up. You can be or do just about anything within the scope of this great event except be lazy and do nothing...cuz as the old saying goes "nothing begets nothing!" So c'mon! If you've enjoyed your little visit to Beckwourth Frontier Days, isn't it time to take the next step? Give a little back to this community that has been good to you, and do it through an event that symbolizes all that has been and is best about Yuba-Sutter...a great place to live, work and pray...er, I mean play. Actually I mean both! Anyway that's how this Reverend sees it, and may the Good Lord Bless Ya!
Your obedient servant,
